NHS numbers: Birmingham and Solihull community ophthalmology service
In recent engagement with a number of local optometrists, it became apparent that the care of patients referred into our community ophthalmology service commissioned by the Birmingham and Solihull CCG maybe being delayed as a result of NHS numbers not being readily available at the point of referral. We share your concern and suggested an alternative procedure to the CCG that enables us to process a referral in the absence of the patient’s NHS number. The procedure has been approved.
NHS numbers remain an important piece of information and we encourage healthcare professionals to ensure this information is communicated where possible. We will seek to obtain any missing NHS numbers from registered GPs whilst patients are in our care. Nevertheless, we will no longer await the receipt of NHS numbers prior to the processing of referrals and as long as the patient is registered to a GP practice commissioned by the Birmingham and Solihull CCG, we will proceed in order to avoid unnecessary delay to their care.
If you have any questions about what patient information is required for the acceptance of referrals into our community ophthalmology service within Birmingham and Solihull, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0121 454 7779 or via our ‘contact us’ page.
Patients will no longer experience a delay to their care if their NHS number is not readily available.
